We deliver the energy you purchase to power your life.
In 1997 Illinois state law restructured the investor-owned electric utilities, which led to the separation of electric generation from distribution. Natural gas utilities previously had been restructured in the same way. As a result, the Ameren Illinois Utilities no longer generate electricity, but rather only distribute electricity and natural gas. So think of the Ameren Illinois Utilities as your delivery service, moving energy to your door. Similar to UPS®, FedEx® and other delivery services, we don't produce the contents, nor do we set the price of the contents, we simply deliver them.

We purchase the electricity and natural gas from suppliers and deliver it to homes and businesses. We pass on the cost of the electricity and natural gas, dollar for dollar, without any profit to the Ameren Illinois Utilities. Approximately 70 percent to 75 percent of your bill is the charges we collect on behalf of others. These include the companies that generate and supply the electricity and supply natural gas, as well as governmental taxing bodies.

The remaining 25 percent to 30 percent of your bill represents the cost of delivering the electricity and natural gas. The delivery charges are regulated and approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission. The amount you pay for the delivery is largely based on the amount of electricity (measured in kilowatt hours) and natural gas (measured in therms) you use each month.

Delivery service charges provide the revenue we need to build, maintain and improve our large and complex delivery system. It also provides the resources we need to retain the skilled personnel required to provide safe, reliable service to our customers.
